S. Maria Navarrese

Where we are

Santa Maria Navarrese is set in a green valley surrounded by wild olive, fig and carob trees and scented Mediterranean bush.
Some say that the princess had been kidnapped and had to land in Ogliastra when the ship she was sailing on was caught up in a storm. According to the legend which is based on historic facts the princess and her travelling companions later left for the peninsula of Sulis.
It takes its name from the church commissioned in 1052 by the Princess of Navarra, daughter of King Garcia Sanchez V, who wished to thank the Madonna for being saved when her ship was almost wrecked near the dreaded “Monti Insani” now known as Monte Santo.
The central beach of S. Maria is an enchanting, sheltered bay with pretty red porphyry rocks to the south. It is easily reached via the stairs opposite the church or by those in the nearby road where the Saracen Tower is.
