Where we are
The natural monument of the Golgo di Baunei, also known as Su Sterru, in Sardinian "abyss", is found on the highland of the same name, around 400 meters above sea level. It is a karstic gorge, one of the deepest caves in Sardinia and surely among the most unusual in Europe. It reaches a height of 270 m with an elliptic horizontal section that reaches 25 m in diameter in the central section. The abyss is home to an interesting fauna that includes an amphibian called the Sardinian newt, the Porrohomma spider and the Trichoniscus-type terrestrial crustaceans.
How to get there
The highland is reached by going along the road that lead to the small church of San Pietro del Golgo: leaving from the junction opposite the parish church in Baunei. After 5 km there is a junction, go straight on for 2 km and turn right at the junction and follow the road al the way to Su Sterru.
Activites
The scenery offered by the Golgo represents an ideal destination to go on walks among the natural beauties of the area, going along a route which can also lead out onto the splendid beach of Cala Goloritzè, around a one and half hour walk from the Golgo.
